Athens Outtakes #4: Big Sis Has Been A Big Inspiration

December 07, 2007 | Women's Basketball

Lady Bulldog freshman Angela Puleo is writing a weekly "Athens Outtakes" column for her hometown newspaper, The Daily Times in Maryville, Tenn., about the transition from high school to college and her experiences at the University of Georgia. Puleo became the 61st freshman to earn a starting spot with the Lady Bulldogs during Andy Landers tenure and the 21st to do so in their collegiate debut. Maryville also is the hometown of Landers, Georgia's Hall of Fame coach.

This is the fourth installment in the series.

After last week’s shopping, I thought for sure my cold would be gone, but unfortunately I was wrong.

I was wondering if maybe visiting a few more stores would truly make me better this time, but Mom and Dad quickly shot that idea down. So for now I’ll stick with the Tylenol Cold and Sinus.

The weather is starting to cool off and fall is on its way to Athens. There were many days this week that I walked outside and was thankful to be out there for more than five minutes and not sweat. To be honest with you, thankful is a word that occupied my thoughts very often this week.

When you are in college and a student-athlete, it is sometimes easy to get caught up in the rapid pace of everyday things and not take the time to realize who got you where you are. I am so thankful I have had so many wonderful people that have impacted my life in positive ways. I am not just talking about where I am as a basketball player, but also as a person. Of course my parents have played a huge role in my life, but my sister, Meredith, has also been a major influence on who I am.

She was also a Lady Gov until she tore her ACL before the beginning of her senior year. I wore her number (32) in high school because I wanted to continue her tradition. She has helped me through countless bumps and bruises and I am so thankful to have her. There’s that word again ... thankful.

I made a visit to Maryville this weekend for the first time since I had moved into my room in August. I enjoyed visiting with my family and going to see some of my friends I have not seen since this summer. Although I was unable to attend the William Blount football game, I was ecstatic when I got the news from my cousin, Rachel, that the Govs had pulled off a huge win. The game on Friday between two more great teams, the Maryville Rebels and Govs, should be even more exciting.

Be thankful this week for the special people in your life; they make you who you are.
