The Georgia Lady Bulldogs return to action following a 10-day holiday break from competition to face Florida State in the opening round of Florida International University’s Sun & Fun Classic on Saturday evening. The Lady Dogs and Seminoles will square off in the second contest of the evening. Host FIU will entertain Hofstra at 5:30, with UGA and FSU set to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m. Georgia is 10-0 the fifth-best start in school history and the 17th double-digit winning streak in Andy Landers’ 29-season tenure in Athens and ranked No. 7 in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN polls this week. The Lady Bulldogs are paced by a trio of double-digit scorers.
Tasha Humphrey leads Georgia with averages of 16.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Humphrey’s streak of six straight double-double outings came to an end in the Lady Bulldogs’ 102-45 thumping of Mercer in Georgia’s last outing before the break. Humphrey scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds in just 16 minutes of action against the Bears.
Sophomores Ashley Houts and Angel Robinson are averaging 12.1 and 11.2 points per game, respectively. Houts also leads Georgia in assists (4.4 apg) and steals (3.3 spg), while Robinson is the Lady Dogs’ top shot-blocker (1.7 bpg).
Florida State is 9-3 following a victory over Samford on Thursday in Tallahassee.
Mara Freshour is the Seminoles’ top scoring threat at 12.6 points per game, slightly better than Jacinta Monroe’s average of 12.4. Shante Williams is averaging 9.8 points per game and leads FSU in assists (4.3 apg) and steals (2.2 spg).

The series with Florida State
Georgia is a perfect 6-0 all-time against Florida State.
The Lady Bulldogs and Seminoles met last season, with Georgia securing a thrilling 70-65 victory in the Russell Athletic Shootout at the Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Ga. Tasha Humphrey shook off second-half foul trouble to score nine points in a 13-0 surge in the final five minutes of the contest that helped prevent FSU’s upset bid.
A complete box score of that game as well as game-by-game results from the series can be found in the column below of these Game Notes.
Birthday cake(s) to be cut
Tasha Humphrey and Ashley Houts will celebrate birthdays over the next couple of days. Humphrey turns 22 today, while Houts will be 20 on NewYear’s Eve.
Lady Dogs strong versus ACC
Georgia has compiled a stellar 67-12 (.848) record all-time against schools which now comprise the Atlantic Coast Conference as outlined below.
The Lady Bulldogs’ record is somewhat inflated due to their massive 28-2 advantage in the series with arch rival Georgia Tech; however, Georgia still owns a 39-10 (.796) mark versus the rest of the league.
Georgia has played every ACC school but Wake Forest and currently owns .500 or better record against every remaining conference school but Duke.

Lady Dogs look for fourth-best start
Georgia’s 10-0 record to open the season represents the Lady Bulldogs’ fifth-best start to a season in the program’s history. The Lady Dogs’ tied the 1985-86 SEC Championship edition of themselves with their victory over Mercer before the holiday break.
With a victory over FSU this evening, an 11-0 opening would tie the 2001-02 squad for the fifth-best start.
The Lady Dogs’ best beginning was a 14-0 run during their 1998-99 Final Four campaign as outlined below.

Humphrey double-double streak halted
Three-time All-American Tasha Humphrey posted double-doubles six consecutive games between Nov. 15-Dec. 9 and is averaging 16.1 points and 11.1 rebounds during the Lady Bulldogs’ last seven outings.
Humphrey’s double-double string was the longest of her career. Previously, she posted a quintet of consecutive double-doubles midway through her sophomore season when she was a Kodak All-American and finalist for the State Farm/Wade Trophy. The streak was snapped when she scored 20 points but notched just six rebounds in 16 minutes of action in Georgia’s 57-point victory over Mercer on Dec. 19.
Humphrey was halfway to the Lady Bulldogs’ record for consecutive double-doubles. Janet Harris and Wanda Holloway share the mark at a dozen double-doubles as outlined below. Harris did so in the final nine games of the 1981-82 season and the first three outings of the 1982-83 campaign. Holloway set the mark with 12 straight double-doubles in Georgia’s final dozen games of the Lady Bulldogs march to the 1981 WNIT Championship.
Humphrey has reached double figures in 92 of 103 games played at UGA. She also has upped her career tallies of 20-point outings to 42 and of double-doubles to 41.
According to Andy Landers, Humphrey is making even more vital contributions that won’t show up in a box score. “Tasha has been absolutely terrific,” Landers said. “From the time we started practice through the first six games, she’s been a great leader with not only her play but also with her effort and enthusiasm and leadership ability and guidance. I think her team has come to expect and look to her for the leadership we need, which is certainly key to a young basketball team. The way she has played lately has been outstanding. In particular, the way she’s rebounded the ball is probably an improvement for even Tasha Humphrey.”

Another double-digit win streak
The victory over Mercer supplied the Lady Bulldogs with their 17th double-figure winning streak during Andy Landers’ 29 seasons at Georgia.
The best winning streak in UGA annals is a 20-game run in 1985-86.
The Lady Dogs’ last 10-game string of success was a dozen-outing stretch in 2001-02. Georgia also enjoyed double-digit win streaks in 1982-83 (11 games), twice 1983-84 (10 & 15), 1984-85 (13), twice in 1985-86 (20 & 10), 1986-87 (12), 1989-90 (13), 1990-91 (18), 1994-95 (12), 1995-96 (19), 1996-97 (10), 1998-99 (14), 1999-00 (15), 2000-01 (13) and 2001-02 (11).
FYI, 11 of those 14 teams either reached the Final Four or won an SEC title.
“T-Hump” chasing Edwards, 2,000 points
Tasha Humphrey enters today’s game 104 points away from catching Teresa Edwards among Georgia’s career scoring leaders and 115 points shy of becoming the Lady Dogs’ sixth 2,000-point career scorer.
The National Player of the Year candidate is currently No. 6 among the Lady Bulldogs’ career points leaders but sports a better career scoring average than all but one player ahead of her as outlined below.
Humphrey began the season in the No. 9 position but inched past Tracy Henderson with a pair of free throws at the 3:38 mark of the first half versus Georgia Southern on Nov. 13, moved ahead of Wanda Holloway in the waning moments of the Oakland game on Nov. 29 and surged in front of La'Keshia Frett with a three-pointer with 13:22 remaining in the victory over Georgia Tech.

The National Player of the Year candidate is currently No. 7 among the Lady Bulldogs’ career rebounds leaders but sports a better career average than all but three players ahead of her as outlined below.

Georgia’s magic number pops up in four outings
The Lady Bulldogs are 4-0 this season when scoring 80 or more points, upping Georgia’s astronomical winning percentage under Andy Landers when they put up that many points to 412-7. That equates to a success rate of .983293556 over the past 28-plus seasons.
Somewhat interestingly at least we hope you think it’s interesting since it took quite a while to dig the information up is the fact that the Lady Bulldogs are just 28-8 (.778) when they score exactly 79 points, with half of those loses being by three points or less. Georgia managed to defeat Davidson despite scoring 79 points.
Taylor headlines quartet of career highs
Danielle Taylor doubled her previous best scoring high as a Lady Bulldog with 22 points in Georgia’s win over Mercer on Dec. 19. Taylor’s output also represented the most points by a Lady Bulldog this season and her 10-of-18 night from the field supplied the most makes and takes by a Georgia player this season.
Previously, Taylor scored 11 points against Savannah State during her freshman season.
A trio of freshmen also posted career-high efforts against Mercer, with Angela Puleo scoring 14 points, Brittany Carter adding 13 and Jalessa Rhoden chipping in 11.
