Georgia Players Have A (Paint) Ball

December 19, 2007 | Football

ATHENS, Ga. --- The players huddled up and discussed the game plan. They broke the huddle, lined up and sprinted to their designated assignments.

No, the members of the Georgia football team weren’t playing a game or even practicing. Rather, the Bulldogs were enjoying a spirited round at Athens Paintball on Wednesday.

“We’ve had a lot of fun together this season,” safety and special teams ace Andrew Williams said. “Things like this are great for our team. Coach (Mark) Richt has been a blast this year. We’ve had fun playing football and doing things like this.”

“This was something a little different for us,” said fullback Brannan Southerland, who was dressed head to toe in camouflage. “We enjoy playing football together, but it’s fun to do something like this too. It’s a chance to cut loose.”

Working in small groups in an area, the Bulldogs had to navigate through a type of obstacle course while firing at and being fired upon by fellow players. The object of the game is to advance to the opposite end of the field without being splattered with paint. Tailback Ryan Rearden was a paintball veteran, arriving with his own gear, and tight end Jeff Potterbaum’s military experience gave his team an advantage.

“You have to work together, so there’s definitely some teamwork involved,” Southerland said. “You have to call out where the other guys are, what they’re standing behind, who to cover. It definitely takes teamwork.”
