Getting To Know Georgia Volleyball Student-Athlete Mara Martin

ATHENS, Ga. -- Throughout the 2007 volleyball season, both volleyball fans and Bulldog fans alike have been able to get know members of the UGA volleyball team with question and answer sessions being featured on Georgiadogs.com. Mara Martin, a native of Monroe, Mich., is a junior transfer setter for the Bulldogs and is the final installment in the series.

Question: What is it that attracted you to Georgia?
Answer: The coaching staff, the team and the great atmosphere around campus.

Q: What do you like most about the city of Athens?
A: The support from the community and college atmosphere.

Q: What is your favorite thing about the sport of volleyball?
A: That it is an ultimate team sport. You have to have everyone on the same page to be successful.

Q: What is your earliest volleyball memory?
A: Playing around with my sister in seventh grade at her practices on the side lines.

Q: What volleyball memory stands out the most for you?
A: My first at-home collegiate start. It was so exciting to be playing at such a high level and around a great crowd.

Q: If you could play any other sport in college, what would it be?
A: I wish it was gymnastics, but because I am too tall I would have to go with basketball.

Q: What is the best part of being a collegiate-athlete?
A: Having so many great resources available to you and being able to meet many other athletes from different sport teams.

Q: What (if any) pre-game superstitions or rituals do you have?
A: I have too many to say them all, but one is painting my nails, and also rapping Im So Hood by DJ Khaled.

Q: What are some of your favorite things to do in your spare time when you are not playing volleyball?
A: I love to shop and hang out with my friends.

Q: Who is your most influential role model(s)?
A: My parents. They have made me the person I am today.

Q: Who is your favorite professional athlete?
A: Even though he is retired, Michael Jordan.

Q: What celebrity would you most like to meet?
A: Michael Jordan.

Q: Do you have a favorite type of music you listen to? Favorite artist?
A: I like just about anything and everything. Favorite artists include The Pussycat Dolls, OneRepublic, Rascal Flatts, Maroon5, and Chris Brown.

Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: I have so many favorites, so it basically changes every week. I like Dumb and Dumber, Tommy Boy, Legally Blonde, The Notebook and A Cinderella Story, just to name a few.

Q: Do you have a favorite food or meal?
A: Other than candy, pancakes and syrup or just the syrup.

: What is your favorite holiday?
A: Of course I like Halloween because of the candy, but my favorite holiday is really just the holiday that is closest to coming up on the calendar!

Q: What was your favorite TV show(s) growing up?
A: My Little Ponies, Kids Incorporated and Saved by the Bell.

Q: What is your favorite TV show now? Do you have a favorite character on that show?
A: I love reality, so my favorites are Americas Next Top Model and the Hills.

Q: What is the best book that you have ever read?
A: Any of the Harry Potter books.

Q: What is your favorite class you have taken so far at UGA?
A: ECHD, Interpersonal Relationships. It is interesting to learn about yourself as well as your peers around you.

Q: Name one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you.
A: I am a pianist. I've played for 14 years.

Q: What is the place that you haven't traveled to, which you would most like to visit?
A: Australia.

Q: Who was your favorite teacher and what was your favorite subject in high school?
A: Mr. Hoffman who taught biology. I am going into nursing, so I have always been interested in subjects like that.

Q: What would be your dream job?
A: A professional shopper. It just sounds too good to be true.

Q: Do you have a nickname on team?
A: Mars or Mars Bars, Queenie, Patch and "The funniest girl on the team."

The Georgia volleyball team (16-10, 7-9 Southeastern Conference) returns to action on Wednesday in Auburn, Ala., where they will take on the Auburn Tigers (11-16, 3-13 SEC) at 8 p.m. ET. The two teams met earlier this season in Athens, and the Bulldogs won that contest 3-0. Following the contest with Auburn, the Bulldogs will play host their final home match of the season on Sunday, Nov. 11, against the Arkansas Razorbacks (10-16, 4-12 SEC) at 1:30 p.m.
