The basics
Georgia returns to action following a weeklong hiatus from competition to face Prairie View A&M in the opening round of the Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island on Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET. The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Panthers square off in the second game of the evening. Southern Cal is slated to face Virginia Tech at 5:40 p.m.
The Lady Bulldogs are 4-0 to date and opened the campaign with a quartet of victories over Richmond, George Mason, Georgia Southern and Temple within an eight-day span. All of those contests were held in the friendly confines of UGA’s Stegeman Coliseum.
Senior Tasha Humphrey and sophomore Ashley Houts pace the Lady Bulldogs’ on the offensive end as each is averaging 15.5 points per game to date.
Prairie View A&M, an NCAA Tournament squad a year ago, is 1-4 on the young season. The Lady Panthers finished 1-2 at Baylor’s BTI Classic (defeating Howard but falling to St. Mary’s and Baylor) before losing at Texas A&M last Thursday and at Florida on Tuesday en route to the Bahamas.
Guard Candice Thomas and forward Gaati Werema provide Prairie View with a potent 1-2 scoring punch, averaging 17.2 points and 15.4 points, respectively.

First date with PVAMU
The Lady Bulldogs have never faced Prairie View prior to this evening’s match-up.
In fact, Georgia has only played three games against teams from the SWAC prior to tonight. The Lady Bulldogs are 2-0 against Alcorn State (91-51 in Dec. 1998 and 78-38 in Dec. 1999) and 1-0 against Grambling State (73-51 in Nov. 1986).
Inaugural international appearance for Lady Bulldogs
Georgia has never played a game not on United States soil prior to tonight.
To date, the Lady Bulldogs have traveled off the continental United States mainland three times for the Rainbow Wahine Invitationals in Honolulu in Nov. 1992 and Nov. 2004 and for the Northern Lights Invitational in Achorage in Dec. 1996. Georgia compiled a 5-3 record in those trips, going 0-2 in Hawaii in 1992, 3-0 in Alaska in 1996 and 2-1 in Hawaii in 2004.
Cooper-Dyke versus the Lady Bulldogs
While Georgia has not faced Prairie View before, the Lady Bulldogs have competed against Lady Panther coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke when she was a standout guard on powerhouse Southern Cal teams in the 1980s.
Cooper-Dyke scored 12 points, dished out three assists and collected four steals in 32 minutes of action during the Trojans’ 81-57 victory over Georgia in the 1983 Final Four in Norfolk, Va.
Georgia and Southern Cal then during each of the following three seasons.
Cooper-Dyke did not play in games that were part of the 1983-84 and 1984-85 campaigns. She did play when No. 3 Southern Cal defeated No. 2 Georgia, 70-67, in the championship game of the TransAmerica Classic in Los Angeles on Dec. 28, 1985. Cooper-Dyke scored 20 points and had a pair of assists and steals in 31 minutes of playing time.
Lady Bulldogs secure tight win over Temple
Georgia escaped an upset bid by Temple last Friday by scoring the final eight points in a 57-51 victory over the Owls. The Lady Bulldogs led the entire game until Temple surged to a 51-49 lead with 4:41 remaining.
Key to Georgia’s win was a series of defensive stops late in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs regained the lead at 52-51 when Ashley Houts hit Angela Puleo in transition. After another defensive stand, Puleo drove the ball she rebounded past midcourt and hit Angel Robinson with a pinpoint pass that turned into a lay-up.
“Every type of game is important this time of year,” Andy Landers said. “Being in a game where we had to depend on our defense could be beneficial to us because our defense made the plays late in the game that won the game for us.”
The Lady Bulldogs built solid leads throughout the contest only to allow Temple to rally. Georgia led 21-7 in the first half before a 14-3 Owl run. In the second stanza, the Lady Bulldogs let nine- and 10-point leads slip from their grasp.
“T-Hump” inches up to No. 8
Tasha Humphrey ascended into the No. 8 position on Georgia’s career scoring leaders ledger during the Lady Bulldogs’ win over Georgia Southern.
Humphrey inched past Tracy Henderson with a pair of free throws at the 3:38 mark of the first half versus the Lady Eagles.
Against Temple, Humphrey posted her 86th double-digit outing in 97 games played as a Lady Bulldog to up her career scoring tally to 1,782 points, 51 shy of the current No. 7 mark of Wanda Holloway.
Humphrey appears well on her way to becoming Georgia’s fifth 2,000-point career scorer. She enters tonight’s game 218 shy of reaching that plateau; however, Humphrey’s career scoring average is better than all but one player ahead of her in the Lady Bulldogs’ top-10 as outlined below.
That old magic number 81 pops up in first three outings
The Lady Bulldogs already are 3-0 this season when scoring 80 or more points, upping Georgia’s astronomical winning percentage under Andy Landers when they put up that many points to 411-7. That equates to a success rate of .983253588 over the past 28-plus seasons.
Somewhat interestingly at least we hope you think it’s interesting since it took quite a while to dig the information up is the fact that the Lady Bulldogs are just 27-8 (.771) when they score exactly 79 points, with half of those loses being by three points or less.
Points galore against Georgia Southern
Georgia earned a bushel full scoring markers in a Nov. 13 win over Georgia Southern.
The Lady Bulldogs topped the century mark for the first time in nearly two seasons (lastly in a 103-34 victory over Savannah State on Dec. 10, 2005) and scored their most points since a 105-62 thumping of Florida on Jan. 12, 2003.
Six Lady Bulldogs scored in double figures, with Christy Marshall and Lindsey Moss posting career highs.
Marshall equaled her best scoring output by connecting on 8-of-9 shots from the floor. That tally matched her performance against Alabama last season.
Moss knocked down a quintet of three-pointers en route to the first double-digit performance of her collegiate career. Her previous career high was nine points at Alabama on Jan. 29, 2006 when she was a freshman at Tennessee before transferring to Georgia.
Puleo pledges freshman starters sorority
Angela Puleo got the nod for the opener against Richmond to join a long list of impressive first-year players who have started during Andy Landers’ 29 seasons in Athens.
Puleo became the 61st freshman to start a game for Landers at UGA and the 21st to do so in her collegiate debut.
Six current Lady Bulldogs Megan Darrah, Ashley Houts, Tasha Humphrey, Christy Marshall, Angel Robinson and Rebecca Rowsey are among the list of freshman starters. Houts and Humphrey are among the 21 freshmen to start their first collegiate contest.
A complete list of the Landers’ freshman starters can be found to the right, with the players who have started their debut in bold-faced type.
Red Cross Report
Redshirt freshman Jaleesa Rhoden is the only member of the Lady Bulldogs’ active roster who has not seen action due to injury.
During the preseason, Rhoden underwent a procedure to relieve unresolved issues from an earlier arthroscopic procedure to her right knee. She missed last season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and lateral meniscus in that knee in the spring of 2006. Rhoden is dressing out to take part in warm-ups and is gradually working her way back to full speed in practices. Her status is being evaluated “day-to-day.”
Danielle Taylor saw her first action of the season against Georgia Southern. Taylor missed the Lady Bulldogs’ first two outings after she sustained a concussion in Georgia’s first exhibition game against DT3-Atlanta on Nov. 1.
Taylor was cleared to work her way back into practice on Nov. 10. She dressed out for the George Mason game the next day and took part in her first practice in nearly two weeks on Nov. 12. Taylor scored two points, grabbed three rebounds, dished out two assists and collected a steal in 17 minutes of action against Georgia Southern.
In addtion, freshman Nicole Stroud is redshirting this season. She underwent a debridement and microfracture to her right knee on September 27 to address a preexisting injury.
In addition II, senior Megan Darrah missed the exhibition opener after suffering a sprained right ankle in practice the day before that contest but returned to action vs. Premier Players.
