Coaches Corner
November 02, 2007 | Gymnastics
Every year I find it amazing to see how fall break affects our athletes in so many diverse ways. For some, the rest comes at a much needed time, and they return better than when they left. Unfortunately it can also be a major setback for others. Perhaps the emotional high of the annual Georgia-Florida game in Jacksonville had a little to do with it this year as well.
For the most part, this week started off a little rough and has steadily improved as the days have passed. We made some wholesale changes in our training regiment, and the team has responded positively to them.
Similar to what Coach Richt did for the football team’s energy level, we have been trying to push those buttons as well. The energy and synergy of our teams have been so important in the past, and each year calls for new ways of creating the most energetic and productive atmosphere.
Gymnastically we are about where I thought we would be, though it is not where we would like to be. In general, bars and beam are leading the pack, while vault and floor are still struggling a bit from lack of shear numbers. As we approach Thanksgiving, the biggest concern is getting floor routines that can be done with consistency and without risk of injury. This team’s health will be the biggest key to our success, so we are looking at starting a bit slower than our typical January. I expect that the next two weeks will tell us a lot about how we will begin this season.
