No. 10 Lady Bulldogs Set To Host Exhibition Opener

October 31, 2007 | Women's Basketball

ATHENS, Ga. --- The No. 10-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs will unofficially open their 2007-08 campaign on Thursday night with an exhibition game against DT3, a team comprised of former collegiate standouts, at Stegeman Coliseum at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free.

The Lady Bulldogs began pre-season practices less than three weeks ago, a turnaround that head coach Andy Landers finds extremely quick.

"To me, I don't know that it's as exciting as it is challenging," Landers said. "You're working with a short preparation period, much shorter than I remember when I first started coaching when it was five or six weeks long. Now, all of a sudden, you're practicing two and a half or three weeks and then playing games, which is a challenge. I know enough about our basketball team to know that we're not ready to play, but it is that time of year and we have to. I'm just hopeful that the two teams we play are good enough to expose us because we certainly can be exposed."

The trip to Athens will be the second of a four-game tour for DT3 that began against Florida State on Wednesday and continues at Clemson and Mississippi State on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

The DT3 roster is headlined by former Lady Bulldog Janese Hardrick, who wrapped her collegiate career just last season. Hardrick ranks No. 21 among Georgia's career scoring leaders with 1,212 points. Other former SEC standouts on the DT3 lineup include Taneshia Thompson and Tia Miller from Auburn and Dalila Eshe from Florida.

While practices have progressed well, the Lady Bulldogs' development seems to have stalled of late according to Landers.

"For the most part, practices have been very good," he said. "We've gotten to what's hard. We've gotten past the simple, quick and easy stuff that you have every year with a basketball team. You get to a point to where you have to do things differently to improve and that, unfortunately, has the team stymied a little bit right now. I don't feel like we're moving ahead."

The USA Today/ESPN pre-season coaches poll was released on Wednesday with Georgia ranked at No. 10.

"Today, I don't think that we're that good," Landers said. "Maybe every else isn't as good as we are. Who knows, because it's early. I think we have the potential to be the kind of team. Early on, I don't think we're going to look like a top-10 team."

Georgia will welcome back three starters and five additional letterwinners from last year's team which posted a 27-7 record, finished as runner-up in the SEC and advanced to the "Sweet 16" round of the NCAA Tournament. Landers, who was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame this past summer, begins his 29th season in Athens 16 victories shy of his 700th win at Georgia and 34 "Ws" away from his 800th overall victory.
