The Basics
Georgia and LSU clash in a series which has produced more than its share of thrilling games of late. The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Tigers meet Thursday night for the ninth time in the last three years and 364 days. Six of the previous eight matchups have been decided by seven points or less, including a trio of two- and one-point decisions.
Georgia, which is ranked No. 14 in the latest AP and ESPN/USA Today polls, is 18-4 overall and 5-2 in SEC play entering tonight¹s game. The Lady Bulldogs' lone league losses are to LSU and Tennessee, their next two opponents. Georgia sports a modest four-game winning streak that includes victories over two ranked foes, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss.
LSU is 20-2 overall and 6-1 in league action and is ranked No. 7 in both of this week's polls. The Lady Tigers have won five straight by an average of 19.6 points since dropping a 77-74 decision at Ole Miss on Jan. 11.
Lady Dogs Lead Series
Georgia enters today's matchup with LSU sporting an 18-14 advantage in the all-time series, including a 9-4 mark in Athens. However, LSU has won each of the last six meetings.
The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Tigers met just three and a half weeks ago in Baton Rouge, with LSU securing a 57-55 win. Sylvia Fowles scored on a layup with 53 seconds remaining to put the Lady Tigers up by two. LSU then stopped Georgia on its last two possessions.
In the most recent matchup in Athens on Jan. 22, 2006, LSU secured a 65-64 win. There were two ties and five lead changes in the final 1:21 of that thriller, with Seimone Augustus sealing the win on a jumper with 14 seconds remaining.
Georgia and LSU met twice this season and last year as part of the SEC scheduling process which has each school play three opponents twice to get to the NCAA mandate of a 14-game conference schedule for an automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
FYI, the Lady Dogs also play Florida and Tennessee twice this season.
FYI (Take II), Georgia is slated to play Florida, Vanderbilt and Auburn twice during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons.
Quoting Andy Landers...
On the challenges of facing LSU:
"LSU is a basketball team that obviously has a lot of weapons.
"Defensively, they¹'re very, very good, not just in defending the basket but in terms of defending the opponent...forcing turnovers and trying to get an opponent out of their rhythm. They can afford to gamble some on the perimeter because they've got the shot-blocker back in the hole waiting on you. They're a tough team to play well against offensively.
"On the other end of the floor, they¹re a very good offensive team that can shoot the long ball, have great play at the point and then perhaps the best player in America inside."
