September 20, 2006 | General

ATLANTA, Ga. --- The University of Georgia Athletic Association held its second annual UGA Day at Drew on Wednesday.

Volunteers from the UGA Alumni Association and Athletic Association, including Director of Athletics Damon Evans, visited Drew Carter School in Atlanta to speak to the students about the importance of staying in school.

"High school dropout rates are huge in Georgia, so we really wanted to help out and do anything we can to help teachers encourage students to stay in school," said Dave Muia, UGA Special Assistant to the Athletic Director. "Hopefully, these kids will be impacted by the visit."

Events began in the morning when volunteers from the UGA Alumni Association read to students at the Primary Academy.

Evans and former student-athletes Mike Gilliam (football), Ashley Godfrey (softball) and Meagan Welch (volleyball) spoke with students from the Junior Academy about balancing academics and athletics. The Georgia contingent then passed out "I'm Georgia" Towels to the eighth graders and led them in a pep rally.

The student-athletes also visited classrooms in the Elementary Academy.
