ATHENS, Ga. --- University of Georgia seniors Jason Jacobs and Bobby Felmy were selected Wednesday during day two of Major League Baseball's first-year player draft.
Jacobs was selected in the 20th round by the New York Mets while Felmy was drafted in the 22nd round by the San Francisco Giants. Jacobs, a 6-0, 210-pound native of West Palm Beach, Fla., is enjoying his finest collegiate season. He is batting .339 with six home runs and 45 RBI. He has been the everyday catcher for the eighth-ranked Bulldogs, starting 62 of Georgia's 65 games.
Felmy, a 5-10, 195-pound native of Sunbury, Penn., has started 63 of 65 games this season for the Bulldogs. He is batting .290 with seven home runs and 45 RBI. He is fielding .985 with 134 putouts and five assists.
Jacobs was drafted for the first time in his career while Felmy was a 38th-round pick in 2003 following his freshman year at Georgia Perimeter College before transferring to Georgia. Both Bulldogs said they were thrilled to be selected.
"The biggest thing is to get the opportunity to put on that pro uniform and play," said Jacobs. "It's great that I am going to have a shot."
"I am really excited," said Felmy. "This is what you work for all through college, and it has paid off."
Jacobs and Felmy were part of five current Bulldogs who were selected in the draft that featured a total of 50 rounds and ended Wednesday. On Tuesday, junior pitcher Brooks Brown was a supplemental first round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks while Joey Side went in the sixth round to the Arizona Diamondbacks and junior first baseman Josh Morris was taken by the Atlanta Braves in the 12th round.
