Humphrey highlight 2007-08
As is the case with virtually every Lady Bulldog Basketball campaign, significant achievements abound during 2007-08.
After racing to a 13-0 start the second-best opening in the program’s illustrious history Georgia eventually finished the season with a 23-10 record. That represented the 24th 20-win effort in Andy Landers’ 29 seasons in Athens. The Lady Bulldogs secured their 25th bid in 27 editions to the NCAA Tournament. Georgia now is tied for second nationally in invitations to March Madness.
The Lady Dogs have now reached each of the the last 14 NCAA Tourneys and during that span Georgia finished as NCAA runner-up in 1996 and has reached three Final Fours, six “Elite Eights,” and 10 “Sweet 16s.”
While the post-season is where Lady Bulldog Basketball is perhaps best known, several significant statistical milestones drew much fanfare during the Winter.
On Jan. 20, Tasha Humphrey became just the fifth Lady Bulldog to surpass 2,000 career points. Humphrey eventually ascended to the No. 2 spot among UGA’s career scoring leaders.
On Jan. 24, Andy Landers became just the eighth NCAA Division I women’s hoops head coach to secure 700 victories at the four-year collegiate level. Landers was just the third among those to post 700 wins at one school.
On Feb. 14, Humphrey became just the fourth Lady Bulldog to surpass 1,000 career rebounds.
A set of stellar seniors
Megan Darrah, Tasha Humphrey and Rebecca Rowsey were honored in pre-game ceremonies prior to the regular-season finale against Tennessee.
Each player has definitely made their mark on Lady Bulldog Basketball.
Darrah became Georgia’s 29th 1,000-point scorer at South Carolina on Feb. 28 and also ranks No. 4 among the Lady Dogs’ leaders in careeer games played.
Humphrey ranks No. 2 and No. 4 among Georgia’s career scoring and rebounding leaders, respectively, and became just the second player to lead the Lady Bulldogs in scoring and rebounding for four consecutive seasons.
Rowsey started 63 of her first 100 games played at UGA but her career ended prematurely earlier this season due to a knee injury. Rowsey sports better than a 3.7 GPA and already has been accepted to start classes at the University of Tennessee’s Medical School in Memphis this fall.
Humphrey then took the honoring even further by wearing Rowsey’s No. 50 jersey during the contest. She kept the tribute a secret before revealing the jersey change just prior to player introductions.
Equally impressive, in May, Darrah will receive her degree in Management, Humphrey will receive her degree in Sports Studies and Rowsey will receive her degree in Biology. The trio will up the graduation rate of Lady Bulldog four-year letterwinners under Andy Landers to 96.2 percent (51 of 53).
Winning some holiday hardware
Georgia secured a pair of holiday tournament titles, winning both the Junkanoo Jam over Thanksgiving and the FIU Fun & Sun Classic in Miami in late December.
Tasha Humphrey was tabbed the MVP of the Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Bahamas after averaging 16.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in wins over Prairie View A&M and Southern Cal, while Angel Robinson also earned a spot on the all-tourney team.
Ashley Houts earned MVP honors in Miami after she scored a career-high 24 against FIU in the championship game on Dec. 30, a day prior to her 20th birthday. Humphrey was name to the all-tourney team as well. She scored 22 points on her 22nd birthday versus Florida State in the semifinals.
Humphrey UGA’s WNBA star
Tasha Humphrey became Georgia’s eighth WNBA first-round draft pick in the last eight years when Detroit selected her No. 11 overall on April 9. The Lady Bulldogs’ tally of first rounders ranks third nationally behind only Tennessee with 10 and Connecticut with nine.
