Gretzmacher Excels To Open SEC Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. --- Georgia junior Sarah Gretzmacher is in third place in the heptathlon as the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships got going on Thursday afternoon.
Following four events of the heptathlon at John McDonnell Field, which is open for the first time since being completely renovated, Gretzmacher scored 3,165 points to put herself in third place. Mississippi State's Marissa Harris (3,240) and South Carolina's Keke Clarke (3,232) are in first and second place, respectively.
Gretzmacher positioned herself to score in the heptathlon after her finish in both the shot put and high jump. In the shot put, Gretzmacher registered a career-best throw of 37 feet, 3 1/4 to finish second. Gretzmacher tied with teammate sophomore Shaka Dennison and Clarke for first in the high jump after a season-best mark of 5-6.50.
Dennison, who won the 200 with a time of 24.14, is in 12th place after four events. The final three events of the heptathlon are scheduled for Friday afternoon.
Action begins on Friday with junior Jennifer Dahlgren competing in the women's hammer at 11 a.m. EDT and the second day of competition concludes with sophomore Charlie Dickhaus running in the 10,000-meter event.
