ATHENS, Ga. --- The University of Georgia football team wrapped up spring practice with the annual G-Day game at Sanford Stadium Saturday, April 8. The Red team, comprised of the first-team offense and second-team defense, overcame the Black team (second-team offense, first-team defense) by a score of 14-10 before a crowd of 18,530.
"The weather was not very good today but it was a good event for Georgia football," said head coach Mark Richt. "There were highs and lows on both ends. Overall I think it was an entertaining game with great plays on both sides of the ball."
After opening the game by forcing a three-and-out and a punt by the Red offense, the Black team got on the board first with a 64-yard touchdown strike thrown by freshman quarterback Matthew Stafford. Under center for the first time in Sanford Stadium, Stafford ran play-action to Danny Ware, then threw deep down the left side to wide-open junior Mikey Henderson, who caught the ball and maintained his balance and stumbled into the endzone for the touchdown.
"I just tried to relax and have fun out there," said Stafford. "I just tried to play the game the way I know how to and tried to execute." Following a scoreless second quarter, the Red squad evened up the game at 7-7 as redshirt sophomore cornerback Ramarcus Brown intercepted redshirt freshman quarterback Joe Cox at the Red 20-yard line and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown. The White team regained its advantage just two minutes later however, as junior placekicker Andy Bailey split the uprights on a the only field goal attempt of the game, a 25-yard effort, making the score 10-7.
