No. 10 Georgia Posts Doubleheader Sweep over South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. --- The No. 10-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (34-9, 14-3 SEC) clinched their 16th  consecutive Southeastern Conference series on Wednesday after posting a doubleheader sweep over the South Carolina Gamecocks (22-19, 2-12 SEC) at Beckham Field.

 

            The Bulldogs run-ruled the Gamecocks in game one with a 10-0 win in five innings.  Georgia clinched the series with a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.

 

            Kasi Carroll (15-3) hurled a two-hit shutout in game one, striking out six.  The native of Norris City, Ill., helped her cause at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.

 

            Four Bulldogs posted multi-hit performances in game one as Georgia pounded out 12 hits.  Courtney Knight went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Megan McAllister contributed two hits and two RBI. 

 

            Jessica Doucette (12-4) secured her fifth straight win in the nightcap after scattering two earned runs and three hits in 7.0 innings of work.

 

            Knight posted a 3-for-5 performance in the second game of the twinbill with a double and three RBI. 

 

Ashley Godfrey slugged her 6th home run of the season with a solo blast in the third inning of game two.  The native of Columbus, Ga., is currently one home run shy of the career home run mark (38) set by former Bulldog All-American Kim Wendland (2002-05).

 

            Georgia took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one after McAllister plated Knight on an RBI single.

 

            The Bulldogs added four runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 5-0.  Godfrey led off the frame with a double to center field.  Pinch-runner Kelsey Todd scored on Carroll's two-run home run to left field.  Sojourner Moody reached on a walk and scored on a stolen base and a throwing error.  Knight plated the final run of the frame with an RBI single.

 

            The Georgia offense exploded for five additional runs in the third inning. Middleton and Becky Mohl each contributed two RBI hits.  McAllister also tallied an RBI single as the Bulldogs sent 10 hitters to the plate.

 

            Kate Pouliot (3-5) took the game one loss in the circle for the Gamecocks after allowing six earned runs and 12 hits in 5.0 innings.

 

            The Gamecocks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two on McKenna Hughes' two-run home run.

 

            Georgia retook the lead in the second inning after Knight tallied a three-RBI bases loaded double. 

 

            Godfrey's two-out solo blast in the third inning extended Georgia's lead to 4-2.

           

            The Bulldogs failed to score a run in the fifth inning after loading the bases with no outs.

 

            Georgia added an additional run in the sixth inning courtesy of Chelsea Cantillo's sacrifice fly.

 

            Christie Hamilton (11-8) took the game two loss for South Carolina after allowing five earned runs and nine hits in 7.0 innings.

 

            The Bulldogs and the Gamecocks resume play on Thursday with a single game set for 1 p.m. EST.
