ST. SIMONS ISLAND --- Behind individual leader Brian Harman and two others in the top six, the No. 1-ranked Georgia men's golf team surged to the first-round lead at the SEC Championship on Friday at Sea Island's Seaside Course.
The Bulldogs staked themselves to a 4-shot lead on the first day of competition by shooting a 4-under-par 276. Alabama is the next-closest team at even-par 280, followed by Florida at 285, Tennessee at 286, LSU at 288, Auburn at 289 and Ole Miss and Vanderbilt both at 290.
"It feels good to get off to a good start at the SECs," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "We'd had a good week of preparation, and I believed our guys would come in focused and ready to go. Having a good first round like this gives us confidence and momentum. We just need to keep it going the next two days."
Harman and teammates Chris Kirk and Kevin Kisner accounted for three of only eight under-par scores posted in the first round by the 60 players in the field.
Harman, a freshman from nearby Savannah who has played Seaside layout numerous times, fired a 3-under 67 on the par-70, 6,991-yard layout. Harman has a 1-shot lead over a group that includes Kirk at 2-under 68. Harman and Kirk recently were named national semifinalists for the Hogan Award and were chosen to play on the United States Palmer Cup Team this summer in Scotland.
"I felt like I had a great finish," Harman said. "I've been struggling some, but I hit it well today and my putting went well. It felt good. As for the rest of the weekend, I'd take three 67s for sure."
