ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia junior Jennifer Dahlgren broke the school record in the hammer throw as the Bulldog Invitational got underway at the Spec Towns Track on Friday afternoon.
Dahlgren (Buenos Aires, Argentina) launched her sixth throw of the event 226 feet, 9 inches, which broke her own school record of 223-1, topped the collegiate ranks in 2006 and was the 13th-longest throw in the world this year. Also on Friday, Dahlgren was awarded the Southeastern Conference Indoor Women's Field Athlete of the Year.
Dahlgren, who turned 22 on Friday and had her parents in town cheering her on, also broke the women's hammer record for Argentina and South America with her NCAA regional qualifying mark. Following Friday's action, Georgia head coach Wayne Norton, who was named the SEC Women's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year, was pleased with Dahlgren and the rest of Georgia's performances.
"We are giving ourselves just about exactly what we want which is to go out and perform at a high level," Norton said. "Our teams do not always have to have the top competition to have success. Jenny and Kyle (Helf) were both examples of that today."
Georgia finished the first day of the two-day meet with two other first-place finishes. In the triple jump, senior Patricia Sylvester took first with a regional qualifying effort of 43-6. Also, junior Shenae Dawkins finished a spot behind Sylvester with a mark of 42-9.75.
Freshman Justin Gaymon was Georgia's third winner after crossing the finish line in 21.75. Gaymon edged Randy Curry by .01 and all five top finishers in the race were Bulldogs. In addition, sophomore Kyle Helf logged a personal-best and regional qualifying mark in the hammer after finishing fifth (190-11).
