NEXT GAME
Fri., March 10 @ SEC Tournament -
Nashville, Tenn.
Georgia vs. Arkansas
• Georgia tips off the postseason against the same opponent with which it ended the regular season. The Bulldogs, as the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Division, will face West No. 3 seed Arkansas in the SEC Tournament first round Thursday night in Nashville, Tenn.
• The Bulldogs enter tonight's game with a 15-14 record, 5-11 in SEC play. That represents a 7-game overall improvement in the Win/Loss ledger from last season, three games better in SEC competition. Still, the Dogs begin the postseason having lost six of their last seven games after starting the month of February with two straight wins, including their first victory at Vanderbilt since the 2001 season.
• Tonight's combatants met just four days ago in Athens. Ronnie Brewer led four double-figure scorers with 25 points as the Razorbacks took a 74-57 decision from Georgia in each team's regular-season finale.
• Just one time since the SEC Tournament was revived in 1979 has Georgia played its first-round game against the same opponent as in its last regular-season game. That came in 1985, when the Bulldogs lost at Tennessee to end the regular season and defeated the same Volunteers in the SEC tourney five days later.
Georgia - Arkansas Series
• Tonight's game is the 21st all-time meeting between Georgia and Arkansas in basketball. Arkansas holds a 13-7 lead in the series, which began in 1992, the year in which the Razorbacks joined the SEC. This record does not exclude two UGA victories that were later vacated because of NCAA sanctions.
• Five of Georgia's wins have come in Athens (1992-96-98-02-04). One came in the 1997 SEC Tournament in Memphis, and the Bulldogs' lone win at Fayetteville occurred in 2003.
• If the pattern of history holds true, don't expect a close game tonight. The average margin of all 20 games between these two schools is 11.5 points. Just five of the 19 games were decided by five or fewer points.
Georgia & the SEC Tournament
Following are some facts about Georgia's past performances at the SEC Tournament:
• Here's a yearly record of Georgia's showing at the SEC Tournament since it was revived in 1979:
1979: 1-1 (Second Round)
1980: 0-1 (First Round)
1981: 2-1 (Championship Game)
1982: 0-1 (Second Round)
1983: 3-0 (Champions)
1984: 1-1 (Second Round)
1985: 1-1 (Semifinals)
1986: 0-1 (Second Round)
1987: 1-1 (Semifinals)
1988: 3-1 (Championship Game)
1989: 1-1 (Second Round)
1990: 0-1 (Second Round)
1991: 1-1 (Semifinals)
1992: 1-1 (Second Round)
1993: 1-1 (Second Round)
1994: 1-1 (Second Round)
1995: 0-1 (Second Round)
1996: 1-1 (Semifinals)
1997: 3-1 (Championship Game)
1998: 1-1 (Second Round)
1999: 0-1 (First Round)
2000: 0-1 (First Round)
2001: 0-1 (First Round)
2002: 0-1 (Second Round)
2003: Did Not Play
2004: 1-1 (Second Round)
2005: 0-1 (First Round)
• Georgia has a 32-44 overall record (.421) in Tournament games. That's seventh-best among the 16 teams that have participated in the Tournament's history (includes ex-members Ga. Tech, Tulane and Sewanee).
• Georgia has reached the finals five times: 1940, 1981, 1983, 1988 and 1997. It's reached the semis 13 times, fifth-best among all SEC teams.
• Georgia's only championship came in 1983, and it served as a springboard for the Bulldogs' march to the NCAA Final Four.
• When Georgia won that lone championship in `83, the oldest member of the current group of Bulldogs -- walk-on Jay McAuley -- was still five months shy of his birthdate.
• Since the tournament was revived in 1979, an SEC team has advanced from the first round to the title game (four straight games) just seven times. Georgia has done it twice:
1988 Lost to Kentucky in title game
1997 Lost to Kentucky in title game
• For 19 straight years, from 1980-98, Georgia played at least into the tournament second round. Its 1st-round exit in `99 ended that string, and the Bulldogs had met a similar fate each succeeding time before an opening-round win over Auburn in 2004.
• It took an SEC-record performance of some kind for Georgia to post its last two victories at the Tournament. In 1998, the Bulldogs of Ron Jirsa, set a tourney record for free-throw accuracy when they sank 29 of 30 tries and posted a 79-76 win over Mississippi State. In 2004, Levi Stukes matched the SEC Tournament mark for 3-pointers in a game with eight in leading the Bulldogs to a 73-59 win over Auburn in the first round.
• By beating them in the SEC Tournament, Georgia has had the unusual distinction of playing three recent SEC coaches in their last games at their respective schools: Dale Brown of LSU (1997), Richard Williams of Mississippi State (1998) and Cliff Ellis of Auburn (2004).
• Ten Georgia players have made the All-Tournament team, just four since the tourney was revived in 1979 and none since 1997: Dominique Wilkins (MVP in `81), Vern Fleming (MVP in 1983), Pat Hamilton in 1988 and Ray Harrison (`97).
• Since the Chick-Fil-A "Legends" program was introduced in 1999, the following ex-Bulldogs have represented the Georgia program:
1999 - Vern Fleming
2000 - Alec Kessler
2001 - Zippy Morocco
2002 - Dominique Wilkins
2003 - James Banks
2004 - Lavon Mercer
2005 - Ronnie Hogue
2006 - Joe Ward
