Georgia Edges Vanderbilt, 74-73, In SEC Play

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Sundiata Gaines tipped in his own miss with 18 seconds left, and Georgia held on and beat Vanderbilt 74-73 Saturday for the Bulldogs' second straight victory.
The road team had not won in this series in the previous nine games, but the Bulldogs (14-8, 4-5 Southeastern Conference) used their best shooting performance this season to win in Nashville for the first time since Jan. 24, 2000.
Vanderbilt (12-7, 3-5) shot almost as well, hitting 51 percent (24-of-47) compared to 53.6 percent (30-of-56).
Trailing only by one, Vanderbilt guard Shan Foster missed a 3-pointer from the right wing with 7 seconds remaining. Levi Stukes missed a free throw for Georgia, leaving Vandy 3.9 seconds. But Dan Cage's long inbounds pass went off Julian Terrell's fingertips and out of bounds.
The Commodores never got off another shot in losing their third straight and for the fifth time in six games.
Channing Toney finished with 14 points for Georgia, which topped its previous best of 51.6 percent against Fordham on Nov. 20. Gaines finished with 13, and Stukes and Steve Newman each added 12.
Derrick Byars led Vanderbilt with 21 points, Terrell had 16 and Foster had 15.
Vanderbilt trailed 68-60 after a 3-pointer by Toney when Byars took over the game.
He hit a free throw, then finished off a fast break with a layup and hit two straight 3s, the last giving the Commodores their first lead of the second half and only second of the game at 69-68 with 3:40 left.
