Ashley Houts Named SEC Freshman Of The Week

ATHENS, Ga. --- Ashley Houts, a 5-6, guard from Trenton, Ga., was named the SEC Freshman of the Week by the league office in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday after helping the Georgia Lady Bulldogs to victories over Memphis and Georgia Tech during the previous seven days.
Houts averaged 13.5 points, 6.0 steals and 5.0 assists and connected on 57.9 percent of her field goal attempts against the Lady Tigers and Yellow Jackets. It marked the second time in just four weeks that Houts has earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors this season.
"I haven't focused on trying to win any awards," Houts said. "It's nice to be picked, but I'm more happy that I've been able to help the team keep winning. That's much more important than any individual honor. I'd like to give credit to my teammates for me winning."
Against Memphis, Houts equaled the Lady Bulldogs' single-game record for steals with 10. She tied the mark established by Adrienne Shuler and then
matched by Kedra Holland-Corn and Sherill Baker. Houts posted half of her 10 thefts during the first 4:08 of the contest and also finished with 16 points and five assists (to one turnover).
Houts scored 11 points and supplied game-high tallies of five assists and two steals in Georgia's victory over Georgia Tech.
The Lady Bulldogs are ranked No. 8 in the most recent Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls. Georgia hosts perennial NCAA Tournament team Middle Tennessee on Thursday night at Stegeman Coliseum. The Blue Raiders knocked off North Carolina during the 2004 NCAA Tourney and defeated N.C. State in the 2005 edition of March Madness.
