Georgia Falls To Vanderbilt In Match Play Semis
November 04, 2006 | Women's Golf
Orlando, Fla. --- The No. 1-ranked Georgia women's golf team was upset by fourth-seeded Vanderbilt, 3.0-2.0, in the semifinals of the Hooters Match Play Championship at Eagle Creek Golf Club on Saturday.
"It was a disappointing day," head coach Todd McCorkle said. "This was a match we could have and should have won. We need to be mentally prepared every time we got out to play. I really don't think we were today as a team."
The Bulldogs will now face Michigan State, which lost to Duke in a play-off in the other semifinal, in the third-place consolation match on Sunday.
"We'll see what kind of character we have tomorrow," McCorkle said.
Sophomore Taylor Leon remained perfect at the Match Play event by securing a 2-up win over Chris Brady at the No. 1 position. Leon surged to a 2-up lead by winning No. 4 and No. 5, but Brady won the next two holes to bring the match back to all square. Leon then captured No. 8, No. 10, No. 11 and No. 13 to build a 4-up edge with five holes remaining. Brady won No. 14, No. 15 and No. 16 to pull within one but Leon guaranteed the victory by winning No. 18.
Garrett Phillips provided the Bulldogs with their other point with a 2 and 1 decision over Kristen Svicarovich at No. 4.
Liebelei Lawrence defeated Whitney Wade, 4 and 3, at No. 2; Jacqui Concolino topped Mallory Hetzel, 2-up, at No. 3; and Julie Bartholomew bested Alina Lee, 3 and 2, at No. 5.
