ATHENS, Ga. – Five Bulldogs finished in double figures as the University of Georgia defeated West Georgia 96-52 Friday night in an exhibition basketball game at Stegeman Coliseum.
Sophomore Mike Mercer led with 22 points followed by senior Levi Stukes with 19, sophomore Terrance Woodbury with 15, sophomore Rashaad Singleton with 14 and sophomore Billy Humphrey with 10.
“It was a great opportunity for us to get some things accomplished, and we can now measure ourselves and see our strengths and weaknesses so we can improve for the future, Georgia coach Dennis Felton said.”
Less than one minute into the opening half, Stukes dished the ball to Singleton for a dunk and an early two-point lead. West Georgia quickly answered with a three-point shot by junior Terrence Hundley. The Bulldogs took the lead back until 12:14 when the Wolves went up 12-11 off a right-handed lay up from sophomore Paul Harper. Georgia came back with an 8-0 run to take the lead which they would never give up for the remainder of the contest.
The Bulldogs took charge in the second stanza with a quick lay up from senior Steve Newman off the Wolves’ 10th turnover. Senior Jonathan Smith followed with a jumper to bring the lead back down to 24 which was the lowest it would reach for the duration of the game. Georgia increasingly built on its lead hitting five three-pointers over the course of the next eight minutes. They were 7-14 from behind the arc in the half and 14-35 for the game. The Bulldog’s largest lead of the game came at 6:09 when Woodbury hit both free throws to give the team a 48-point edge. Georgia finished the half shooting 60 percent from the floor.
The Bulldogs led in all offensive categories scoring 40 points in the paint to West Georgia’s 22. Points off turnovers went in Georgia’s favor 30-6 along with second chance points at 29-6. Defensively, the Bulldogs dominated in blocked shots with nine and rebounds with 39.
Georgia will return to the court Friday, November 10 as they open the regular season with Southern University. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. (ET)
