Frazier Falls In ITA/All-American First Round

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. --- Southern California senior Dianne Matias defeated Georgia senior Natalie Frazier in the first round of the Riviera/ITA All-American Women's Tennis Championships here Thursday.

Matias, ranked 23rd nationally, posted a 7-6(4),6-2 win over Frazier to advance to the round of 16. Frazier, ranked 21st nationally, now falls to the consolation bracket. She is 4-1 on the year. The elite 32-player field features the top players in NCAA Division I tennis. Frazier was the lone Bulldog in the main draw.

Three other Bulldogs, freshman Adrienne Elsberry, freshman Naoko Ueshima, and senior Darya Ivanov, will be playing at the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind., starting Friday. It is a flighted tournament with entries from LSU, Murray State, Kansas, Kansas State, Notre Dame, Mississippi State, and host team Indiana. Ivanov is 3-1, while Elsberry and Ueshima both have a 2-1 record. Ivanov will play in the "B" flight while Ueshima is in the "C" flight and Elsberry in the "D" flight. In the first round, Ivanov will face Sigrid Fischer (Indiana) at noon. Ueshima will play Cosmina Ciobanu (Notre Dame) at noon. Elsberry battles Casady Pruitt (Murray State) at noon.
