Bulldogs Leading Ping/Golfweek Preview

October 02, 2006 | Men's Golf

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Georgia men's golf team grabbed the first-round lead at the Ping/Golfweek Preview on Monday at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.

Playing on the site of next spring's NCAA Championship, the Bulldogs fired a first-round 1-under-par 279. Georgia, ranked No. 1 in the first GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll of the season, has a 1-shot lead over Texas A&M and a 2-shot edge over Florida.

"I am obviously pretty happy with our start here," said Georgia coach Chris Haack, whose team won the Preview last year in Sunriver, Ore. "We haven't played the way we wanted to the first couple of tournaments, so it was good for us to get off to a good start. That being said, we've still got two rounds to go and a lot of things can happen. We need to stay focused and continue to manage the golf course."

Senior Chris Kirk, who claimed medalist honors in Georgia's last tournament, is fourth individually at 2-under 68. Kirk is one shot behind Texas A&M's Robert Gates, Arizona State's Niklas Lemke and Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin.

Sophomore Brian Harman is eighth at 1-under 69, freshman Hudson Swafford carded an even-par 70 to stand 12th, senior Brendon Todd fired a 2-over 72 and is 28th, and freshman Rob Bennett made his Georgia debut with a 15-over 85 to stand 75th.

The 54-hole tournament will continue on Tuesday and will conclude on Wednesday. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
