Georgia Baseball To Hold Annual Fall World Series
October 13, 2006 | Baseball
Georgia began fall workouts Sept. 24th with a handful of starting spots around the diamond open plus specific roles for the pitchers yet to be determined. After swinging wood bats during the fall, head coach David Perno said the Bulldog hitters will be switching to aluminum bats for these final seven games.
Each team will have four starting pitchers, and the world series games will be nine innings. The pitching matchup for games one and five will be sophomore left-hander Nathan Moreau versus freshman right-hander Dean Weaver. Games two and six will feature sophomore right-hander Stephen Dodson versus sophomore right-hander Iain Sebastian. In games three and seven, sophomore left-hander Jason Leaver will go against junior right-hander Nick Montgomery. In game four, freshman left-hander Alex McRee will face freshman left-hander Justin Earls.
Bulldog pitching coach Brady Wiederhold said he has been pleased with the progress of the pitchers.
“The guys have been focused on what they need to work on from their pitching to lifting and running,” said Wiederhold. “They set the tone for the game, and we’re looking for consistency.”
Georgia’s returning starters among the position players include senior outfielder Jonathan Wyatt, senior designated hitter Matt Robbins, junior third/first baseman Ryan Peisel, junior outfielder Matt Olson and sophomore shortstop Gordon Beckham. Overall, the Bulldogs return 15 lettermen off the 2006 squad that posted a 47-23 record and national ranking of six in the final Baseball America Top 25 poll. Georgia has advanced to the College World series twice in the past three years.
