ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia volleyball freshman Maria Taylor was named the SEC's Freshman of the Week on Tuesday after posting new career highs in kills in recent wins over Georgia Southern and Grambling.
The Alpharetta, Ga., native finished the Bulldogs' win over the Eagles with 17 kills and followed that with 18 in the win over Grambling. Her 18 kills against Grambling went along with a .739 hitting percentage and a career-high five digs. For the week she hit .437, which helped her season average climb .297 points. Taylor has played in 14 of Georgia's (3-1) 15 games so far this year and is third on the team with 3.36 kills per game.
"I knew from the beginning that Maria would have an impact and make contributions for us," said head coach Steffi Legall. "But the fact that she did this so early in the season is a great compliment to how she's adjusted to college life and to our system."
Taylor and the Bulldogs will host Clemson on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the UGA Ramsey Center to end a five-match home stand. Georgia leads the all-time series with the Tigers, 29-11, and won in Clemson a year ago in five games.
"Every time you play a rival I expect it to be an exciting and tough match. We respect all of our opponents and Clemson is one we have a ton of respect for. We expect a great match (Wednesday) night and to show what we've been working on. Hopefully we'll come out with a `W'," Legall said.
