The Bulldogs welcome fifth-ranked Florida (12-1, 2-0) to Athens on Wednesday night for their SEC home opener. Georgia is 5-2 at home so far this year including a win over Georgia Tech on Sept. 18. The Bulldogs have enjoyed several tremendous home crowds including an attendance of 1,563 at the Georgia Tech match just over a week ago. That was Georgia's largest home crowd since 1995.
Georgia and Florida last met in the semifinals of the 2004 SEC Tournament in Gainesville and played to a 3-2 Florida win. The match lasted 2:40 and included 170 combined kills and 216 combined digs. The Bulldogs had two match points in game four and two more in game five but couldn't hold off Jane Collymore, who finished the match with 28 kills including several in the final moments of games four and five. It's safe to say that everyone in the O¹Connell Center that night players, coaches, announcers and fans left the match exhausted.
Florida leads the all-time series 39-8 with Georgia's last win coming in 1990 in Athens. The Bulldogs last defeated a ranked opponent in a 3-2 final over No. 12 Colorado on Sept. 7, 1995 in Provo, Utah.
Georgia head coach Steffi Legall and assistant coach Nicole McCray both played for Gators head coach Mary Wise at Florida. Legall was an All-SEC and All-Region performer in 1990-91. McCray (1999-02) was a second-team All-American and the 2000 SEC Player of the Year. McCray's sister, Amber, is a sophomore RS for the Gators.
