ATHENS, Ga. --- Monica Pang, who was crowned Miss Georgia 2005 over the weekend, was a Hoop Girl for the University of Georgia men's basketball program from 1999-2003.
The Hoop Girls are a support group for the men's basketball program with an emphasis on creating awareness of the program with the goal of increasing attendance and overall fan support. Hoop Girls serve in a variety of roles, including distribution of schedule cards, posters and spirit items, greeters for fans as they arrive for the games, and hostesses for the Tip-Off Club's events.
The 24-year-old Pang represented Lake Lanier in the pageant held in Columbus. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 2003 with a degree in consumer journalism.
As Miss Georgia, she will receive a $15,000 scholarship and represent the state in the Miss America competition in Atlantic City, N.J.
"I am very proud of Monica being selected as Miss Georgia 2005," said John Bateman, Director of Promotions and Hoop Girls advisor. "It was a pleasure of mine to have worked with her while she was at the University of Georgia, and I know she will do a great job of representing Georgia."
