CLEMSON, S.C. -- In their first team-scored meet of the outdoor season, the Georgia women's and men's track teams came in first and second, respectively, at Saturday's Clemson Invitational. The Lady Bulldogs scored 173 points to lead a field of eight teams, while the men rallied for 138.33 points for a runner-up finish to host Clemson.
"The meet was our best meet of the year; we've only had three but it was the best," head coach Wayne Norton said. "Our teams placed very well. Congratulations to the women for their win, it was good for them to take care of business. On the men's side we came up a little short to Clemson, but I'm very happy with what we did."
Krysha Bayley, Jenny Dahlgren, Sultana Frizell, Kierney Hiteshew and Sigrun Fjeldsted combined for five total event titles for the women. Bayley led the long jump with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 20-4.25. Dahlgren commanded the hammer throw at 214-07, also an NCAA mark, while fellow thrower Frizell won the shot put with a 46-10.75 hurl. Hiteshew won the pole vault by clearing an NCAA-worthy 12-11.50, easily a personal best, while Fjeldsted is now three for three in each of her javelin performances this year. She won the event with another NCAA-qualifying throw, 163-10.
On the men's side, LaRon Bennett was noticeably absent from his strongest event, the 400-meter hurdles, but he still managed to scorch the track with his 46.54, first-place finish in the 400 meters for an NCAA-qualifying time and personal best. Brad Smith reappeared after several weeks to win the pole vault, where he soared 17-0.75 for an NCAA mark. The Bulldogs' third title came in the javelin, where Trevor Snyder won with an NCAA-caliber 219-08.
