COLUMBIA, S.C.--- Eighth-ranked South Carolina used a 19-hit attack to cruise to a 17-2 win over Georgia Saturday at Sarge Frye Field.
The Gamecocks (23-5, 4-4 SEC) built an early 4-1 advantage before erupting for eight runs in the fifth to chase Bulldog starter Michael Hyle and reliever Joshua Fields to take a 12-1 lead. USC starter Zac McCamie was the beneficiary of all the offense although he did his part to limit the Bulldogs who fall to 15-11 overall and 2-5 in the SEC. McCamie improved to 6-1, going seven innings and allowing just two hits, two runs (one earned) with three walks and nine strikeouts. Wynn Pelzer and Forrest Beverley pitched an inning apiece to preserve the Gamecock victory.
USC got an unearned run in the first and then took advantage of three walks by Hyle to plate three more runs in the third for a 4-0 lead. Meanwhile, McCamie didn't allow a hit until the fifth and it brought home Georgia's first run. Bobby Felmy reached on a leadoff error by shortstop Steven Tolleyson. Felmy stole second and came home on a run-scoring single by sophomore Jonathan Wyatt that made it 4-1. USC answered in their half of the frame, batting around and scoring eight runs on eight hits. With two on and one out, Georgia turned to Fields but he allowed four straight hits including run-scoring singles to Mark Stanley and Michael Campbell, a two-run double to Chris Brown, a two-run single to Jon Willard and a two-run home run to Steve Pearce.
Hyle dropped to 1-2, allowing six runs on eight hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Fields recorded just one out before leaving, surrendering six runs on six hits.
