CHAPEL HILL, N.C.----- Former University of Georgia multi-event standout Hyleas Fountain won the women's pentathlon competition Sunday at the 2005 USA Indoor Combined Event Championships at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Fountain won the event by tying her personal record and scoring a national best 4,417 points. She won the high jump (6-0.50) and long jump (20-4.25), was runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles (8.23), fifth in the 800 meters (2:23.23) and sixth in shot put (37-3.75).
"I'm excited about my performance," Fountain said. "I was proud of what I did in the high jump; it was a great event for me. I was a little tired for the long jump since the high jump took so much out of me.
"I knew I would have to run all out in the 800 meters, even though [second place finisher Fiona Asigbee] would have had to beat me by seven seconds to win. Fortunately she only beat me by one second. Overall I was very pleased and it give me a boost of confidence for the outdoor season."
Fountain was a four-time NCAA National Champion while at Georgia, and an Outdoor (two-time) and Indoor (once) All-American. She won the women's long jump at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and was the
2004 NCAA Indoor champion in long jump and pentathlon. She appears 16 times in the Georgia record books, including the No. 1 spot in five events.
