Team Notes:
Georgia has won three straight including its first SEC series, beating Kentucky twice on the road at a series played at Applebee's Park. Game three of the series was cancelled due to rain. Up next in the SEC, the Bulldogs hit the road for the second week in a row to face nationally-ranked South Carolina (10-5, 2-4 SEC). The Bulldogs offense has begun to heat up as it batted .337 and scored 20 runs in the two-game set against the Wildcats. For the year, Georgia is batting .276 with a .424 slugging percentage and a .378 on-base percentage.
The Bulldogs have a two-game set versus Furman (9-12) starting Tuesday in Greenville, S.C. The Bulldogs make their first visit to Furman since 1981. The Paladins travel to Athens on Wednesday. Furman fell twice at Ga. Southern this past weekend and had Sunday's series finale rained out. The Bulldogs will depart for Columbia, S.C. on Thursday for an SEC series with South Carolina. The Gamecocks dropped two of three at #11 Florida this past weekend.
Georgia junior closer Will Startup notched a win and a save in the Kentucky series this past weekend. In two appearances, he pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits with no walks and five strikeouts. For the year, Startup is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 3 saves in 21 innings pitched.
Junior third baseman/catcher Jason Jacobs and sophomore centerfielder Joey Side enjoyed a productive week at the plate. In three games, Jacobs batted .636 including a team-best .667 (6-for-9) with four runs scored and 5 RBI in the UK series. Side batted .467 (7-for-15) overall this past week including .455 (5-for-11) with two runs scored, a triple and one RBI against the Wildcats.
Georgia owns a 13-1 edge in the series history with Furman in records dating back to 1950. Against South Carolina, the Gamecocks hold a 38-25 edge. Georgia took the series versus the Gamecocks last year 2-1 to clinch a share of the SEC title. USC has won the last seven games against the Bulldogs in Columbia. They had won eight in a row in the series until Georgia claimed the series last year in Athens.
With Sunday's game rained out, senior Sean right-hander Ruthven (1-1, 3.92 ERA) will get the start Tuesday at Furman. On Wednesday, junior left-hander Mickey Wespthal (0-0, 4.50 ERA) will make his first start since the 2003 season. Westphal was redshirted in 2004 due to shoulder surgery and has made two relief appearances for a total of two innings this season. He owns an 8-9 record in 32 appearances including 26 starts.
