STATESBORO, Ga. ----- Georgia Southern defeated Georgia 9-4 here Tuesday at Clements Stadium.

The Eagles (10-7) broke open a 4-4 tie with a five-run eighth, answering Georgia's late rally. Freshman Joshua Fields had retired eight in a row before a one-out walk to Brent Stephens. Brett Pelfrey followed with a double as the Bulldogs looked to junior Bo Lanier. Georgia opted to intentionally walk Derrick Smith. Lanier fell behind Flint Wipke 3-0 and on a 3-1 pitch, he had a bloop single to right to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead. Lanier fell behind Jeremy Beckham 2-0 and then he blooped another single to right. James Payne then drilled a two-run single to make it 8-4. Logan Phillips made it 9-4 when he grounded out to shortstop.
