Track Reaches New Heights at New Balance Collegiate Invitational

NEW YORK, NY -- Georgia Track and Field took one step closer in their journey to the 2005 SEC Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday as the teams competed at the prestigious New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York, NY.

"The meet was a very good meet for us," head coach Wayne Norton said. "It was our best meet of the year. The competition was quite good, and for us to place as high as we did was a major accomplishment. We had a lot of great highlights, and I think we're in very good shape for this time of the year."

Georgia's distance corps did, as predicted, have a stellar debut in their first indoor meet of the season. Just two seconds out of first place, Simon Ngata finished second in men¹s championship mile in 4:03.79, an NCAA provisional time. Ian Burrell won the men's college 5000 meters in an NCAA provisional time of 14:15.55, while Lauren Burks won the won the women's version of the same race, in 17:11.74. Ian Dickinson also ran the men's college 5000 meters for Georgia, crossing the finish line in 14:26.05 for 5th place and an NCAA provisional mark. Kristin Heffelfinger competed in the women¹s championship 5000 meters and came in 14th (17:12.56).
