ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia volleyball team fell into a tie for eighth place in the Southeastern Conference with a 3-2 (28-30, 30-27, 30-17, 20-30, 15-13) loss to Mississippi State on Friday night at the Ramsey Center.

Georgia is now 9-16 overall and 4-11 in league play. Mississippi State improves to 15-10 and 6-9.

UGA and South Carolina are tied in the conference standings for the last spot in next week's SEC Tournament, with both playing a final regular-season match on Sunday. Georgia owns a head-to-head tiebreaker with the Gamecocks.

Georgia next hosts Ole Miss on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Ramsey Center. South Carolina will host Alabama.

Georgia appeared right for a win on Friday, taking the first game and jumping out to a 17-9 lead in game two. Mississippi State rallied back with a 21-10 run and took games two and three to steal the momentum.

UGA earned a 30-20 win in game four but State earned a two-point win in the back-and-forth game five.

"Both teams played inconsistent tonight," said Georgia head coach Steffi Legall. "In game five neither team could get a lead and both played their best game of the match. If that game had been played to 30 points I'm sure it would have remained close.

"In the end Mississippi State had a little more of a balanced attack with five players at double-digit kills. We relied on our three big hitters, and everyone played hard, just inconsistent. We fought tonight. It was definitely a great effort with good defense and blocking," Legall said.

Alexandra Oquendo had a match-high 23 kills for Georgia and Julia Petruschke and Meagan Welch each added 14 kills. Welch also posted 17 digs and six blocks. Brooke Burlingame finished with a match-high 19 digs and Audra Janak led UGA with 32 assists.
