ATHENS -- The Georgia men's basketball team dropped its conference opener to Tennessee, 72-65 on Wednesday night at Stegeman Coliseum, despite 23 points from freshman guard Sundiata Gaines who was the game's leading scorer.

Trailing 33-42 at the half, the Bulldogs (6-5, 0-1 SEC) cut Tennessee's (8-5, 1-0 SEC) lead to two with 4:41 left in regulation. However, the Volunteers then mustered an 11-0 run, bolstered by a 7-of-8 mark from the foul line, that ended with just 25 seconds remaining and secured the Tennessee victory.

"It was a valiant effort tonight," Georgia head coach Dennis Felton said. "We fought hard all game long and we were able to do some things we wanted to."
