ATHENS -- The Georgia equestrian team defeated SEC-rival South Carolina 1,166-1,097 on Friday night as the Bulldogs'

Western riders galloped over the Gamecocks for a decisive win at the Animal Science Arena on South Milledge Avenue.

Georgia put the meet away with a 282-267 victory in horsemanship in the last event of the competition led by team captain Sarah Dunsmore who scored a 72. A junior, Dunsmore bested her opponent from South Carolina by 22 points in an outstanding ride.

"That's really good considering she rides in both events," said associate head coach Beth Bass, who coaches the Western riders. "It's hard to excel in both."

The Bulldogs won the event despite the fact that many of the athletes competing in horsemanship had only ridden the pattern in practice once.
