ATHENS----Sophomore right-hander David Horne pitched a complete game five-hit shutout to lead Birmingham Southern to a 5-0 win over Middle Tennessee State Saturday at the Athens Regional here at Foley Field.

The Panthers (47-17) secured their first-ever NCAA Divison I regional win and advance to the 7 p.m. elimination game against the loser of the Georgia-Clemson matchup today. Meanwhile, MTSU has its season come to an end with a 40-22 mark. Horne improved to 8-3 on the year while MTSU starter John Williams dropped to 8-4.

BSC struck first in the first, getting a solo home run from Michael Cline (2-for-3, 3 RBI), his fourth of the year. It would be all that Horne and the Panthers would need. Horne allowed just two walks and struck out five in going the distance. Williams was chased with two outs in the sixth, allowing five runs on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

In the fifth, BSC added another run and then put the game away with three more runs in the sixth to build a 5-0 advantage. Cline keyed that rally with a two-run double. Five different Blue Radiers collected a hit apiece.
