The Georgia Bulldogs depart for Omaha, Neb., and the College World Series Tuesday to begin final preparations for their first opponent, the Arizona Wildcats.
Georgia (43-21) moved up to fifth and sixth respectively in the national polls this week following its super regional win over then third-ranked Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Like Georgia, the Wildcats (35-25-1) won a super regional on the road as they defeated 12th-ranked Long Beach State this past Sunday. Georgia is making its fourth CWS appearance in school history and first since 2001 while Arizona last made it 1986 when they won the national title.
The Georgia-Arizona contest will open the 2004 College World Series. First pitch is slated for 2 pm ET on Friday and be televised by ESNP2.
The Bulldogs captured the 1990 national championship and went 0-2 in 1987 and 0-2 in 2001 for an overall record of 4-5 at the CWS. Georgia opens up with Arizona Friday at 2 pm ET. The Bulldogs have never faced Arizona or Texas and are 9-15 all-time against Arkansas.
The Georgia coaching staff features three members of the 1990 national championship team:. Head coach David Perno, assistant coach Don Norris and director of baseball operations Brian Jester. Perno played in 20 games that year with three starts while Norris was on the squad but did not see any action. Jester, a second team ABCA All-American in 1990, was the starting DH/1B and led the club with a .364 batting average, 17 home runs and 64 RBI. Jester was a member of the 1987 CWS squad wiith the Bulldogs too. Perno now has the distinction of going to the CWS as a player (1990), assistant coach (2001 with Georgia) and now as a head coach (2004).
