Athens, Ga. -- Georgia's Christi Thomas was selected by the Los Angeles Sparks with the 12th overall pick in the first round of Saturday's WNBA Draft.

"I was sweating bullets after the first nine or 10 picks, but when they said my name we all screamed and I was too happy," Thomas said. "I'm obviously excited and ready."

Thomas, a three-time All-SEC performer who finished No. 10 on Georgia's career scoring list and No. 5 among the Lady Dogs' career rebounding leaders, became the fifth Georgia player selected in the first round of the last four WNBA Drafts. In 2001, Kelly Miller, Deanna "Tweety" Nolan and Coco Miller were among the first nine picks of the first round. In 2002, Tawana McDonald was a first-round pick as well.

Thomas will join a Los Angeles team which finished 24-10 and lost in the WNBA Finals last season.

"I sort of equate it to my freshman year here at Georgia when I came in to join a great group of seniors like Coco, Kelly and 'Tweety'," Thomas said. "Going to L.A., I'm joining a team with great players such as Lisa Leslie and Nikki Teasley. I'm looking forward to playing with them and learning from them."
