Athens, Ga. --- Christi Thomas, a three-time All-SEC performer for the Georgia Lady Bulldogs, will begin the next chapter of her basketball career on Saturday. Thomas is expected to be selected in the WNBA draft, which will begin at 12:00 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN.
Among four separate mock drafts produced by ESPN analysts Nancy Lieberman, Michelle Voepel and Graham Hays and by former WNBA player Rebecca Lobo, Thomas was predicted to be selected between the No. 7 and No. 12 overall picks in the first round.
Thomas completed her career with 1,593 points, 906 boards and 194 blocks, totals which rank No. 10, No. 5 and No. 4 among the Lady Dogs' career leaders in each respective statistic. She was named first-team All-SEC by league coaches in 2004 after being a second-team choice in 2003 and 2002. Thomas also was named the 2001 SEC Freshman of the Year.
If Thomas is a first-round pick, she would become Georgia's fifth first-rounder in the last four years. In 2001, Kelly Miller, Deanna "Tweety" Nolan and Coco Miller were the No. 2, No. 6 and No. 9 overall picks of the first round. Tawana McDonald was the No.13 player taken in the first round of the 2002 draft.
Nine former Lady Bulldogs played in the WNBA during the summer of 2003, the second-most of any school in the country. Headlining that list were Nolan, who was a second-team All-WNBA pick and an WNBA All-Star, and Kedra Holland-Corn, who were members of the WNBA Champion Detroit Shock.
