The defending varsity national champion Georgia equestrian team is in the midst of full throttle preparations to co-host the Varsity Equestrian Championships, which are set to be held on April 23-24 at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, Georgia.
"We're looking forward to this time to focus as a team and get things rolling to be able to show what this University can do, not only as competitors, but as hosts," Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig said.
Joining the Bulldogs (9-3, 6-1 SEC) as hosts will be Auburn University and the University of South Carolina, the other two Southeastern Conference schools that sponsor equestrian as a varsity sport.
At the Southern Equestrian Championships on March 27, Auburn defeated defending champion Georgia by the narrowest of margins, 820.745-820.25, to claim the 2004 S.E.C. title. "One good thing that came out of the S.E.C.'s is a real thirst or desire to show off exactly what we're about," Boenig said. "That tight loss is just going to be fuel to the fire, hopefully, and add that much more hard riding to our competitors. I think the competitive spirit is definitely up."
