ATHENS---------Georgia's Russ Tanner grabs a jump rope from a bin in the weight room, using it to stretch his leg muscles that are sore from the previous night's mat drills. Within a matter of minutes, Tanner and many of his teammates are drenched in perspiration as they go through a variety of weightlifting drills.
Although it is referred to as the offseason, the reality is that college football players have very little of a break. The Bulldogs virtually went straight from the Capital One Bowl into winter workouts and mat drills.
Next on the agenda for the Bulldogs is spring football practice, which will begin on Saturday, March 20, and continue through April 17 when they have the annual G-Day Game at Sanford Stadium. And while the grass and trees outside start to turn green, Georgia will use spring practice to identify the areas of the team that are green and need seasoning.
"It's a very important time for us as a team," receiver Reggie Brown said. "Every spring is important because you can identify your strengths and your weaknesses. We're all excited about getting back to playing football. The spring gives you a pretty good idea about what kind of team you're going to have. I think that's the exciting thing about it."
