Former Gym Dog Hope Spivey Joins Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2004

ATHENS, Ga.-----Former University of Georgia gymnast Hope Spivey will be inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Sat., April 24 at 6 p.m. at the Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel and Waterfront Convention Center in Portsmouth, Va.

Spivey, a native of Suffolk, Va., and one of the greatest collegiate gymnasts ever, competed four years for the Gym Dogs from 1991-94, leading the program to a team national title in '93 as well as claiming individual national titles on vault, floor exercise and the all-around in '91 and the floor exercise again in '94.

During her career Spivey totaled 11 All-America honors, three individual SEC championships and 27 perfect scores (20 floor, 7 vault). Following her junior season she earned a bronze medal on the vault at the 1993 World University Games, leading the U.S. team to a second-place finish.

As a freshman Spivey earned the Honda Sports Award as the nation's top gymnast.

Prior to her arrival at Georgia, Spivey was a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team that finished fourth in the Seoul Olympic Games. She was also a member of the U.S. gold medal team at the 1987 Pan American Games.
