ATHENS, Ga. -- On the strength of back-to-back tournament titles, the Georgia men's golf team ascended to the No. 1 ranking in the Golfweek poll on Monday.
The Bulldogs, who garnered the preseason No. 1 ranking from GolfWorld, moved into the top spot in the Golfweek poll on Monday after winning the Carpet Capital Collegiate last weekend in Rocky Face. For the Bulldogs, it was their second straight team title as they also won the inaugural Isleworth Invitational in Windermere, Fla., the week before.
The Golfweek poll uses the Sagarin formula that factors in strength of schedule (compared to the GolfWorld poll that is voted on by collegiate coaches). According to the Golfweek poll, the Bulldogs are 30-5 against the rest of the top 25, 41-5 against the rest of the top 50 and 50-5 against the rest of the top 100.
"The polls are great in that they give people something to talk about, and we're certainly flattered by the ranking," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "But the bottom line is we've got to earn it on the golf course by showing up every week with the right attitude and prepared to do our very best. If we're lucky enough to be ranked No. 1 in the last poll, that will be enough for us."
In addition to the team ranking, the Bulldogs are well-represented in the individual ratings. Sophomore Chris Kirk, who won the Isleworth, is the No. 7 golfer in the nation. Junior Kevin Kisner is the next Bulldog at 12th, followed by senior David Denham in 34th.
