ATHENS ----- Senior forward Jonas Hayes, whose career-high 25 points propelled Georgia to an 83-80 win over Georgia Tech last Saturday, was named today as the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, according to an announcement by the league office in Birmingham.
This week's award covers games that were played last week, when the Bulldogs lost at 16th-ranked Pittsburgh on Dec. 30 and upset the No. 3 Yellow Jackets in a double-overtime thriller in Athens. Hayes, a 6-8 forward from Atlanta, led the Bulldogs' offensive effort in both contests, scoring 16 points in the Pitt game. With his twin brother Jarvis, now with the NBA's Washington Wizards, watching courtside, Hayes scored four of his 25 points against Tech in the second overtime period. That included the game's biggest basket with 29 seconds left, giving the Bulldogs an 82-78 lead.
Hayes now leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 14.8 points per game, his highest average since transferring to Georgia from Western Carolina in June of 2000. He also leads Georgia in field goal percentage at 57.5 percent, a figure that ranks sixth among all SEC players.
Hayes' appointment is the first such honor for a Georgia player this season. Last season his brother Jarvis was named the league's top player for the week of Feb. 26, and teammate Ezra Williams won the honor on Jan. 6, 2003.
