Did You Know?
Georgia is 4-1 after a loss under Mark Richt. The only time Georgia has lost back-to-back games under Richt came in his first season in 2001 (vs. Florida and Auburn). Meanwhile, Alabama will be making its first venture out of the state this season when it visits Athens. The Crimson Tide played their opener in Birmingham and their next four contests were all in Tuscaloosa. They will play eight of their 12 games in Alabama.

Georgia-UA Storylines

  • Georgia's Scoring Defense, ranked 1st in the SEC and 2nd nationally, has allowed an average of just 8.5 points a game. The Bulldogs have surrendered just 10 points in the first half this year.
  • For the first time all season, Georgia looks to be as close to full strength on offense and defense as they can be minus the two projected starters DE Will Thompson (dislocated ankle) and senior ROV Kentrell Curry (leg/surgery) who are out for the year. The Bulldogs have been without several key starters due to injuries and suspensions for each of the first four games.
  • Alabama head coach and former QB Mike Shula is best remembered for leading his alma mater to a 20-16 season-opening win over Georgia in Athens on Sept. 2, 1985. A night game carried nationally by ABC-TV, Alabama trailed 16-13 with 50 seconds remaining. Shula directed a five play, 71-yard game-winning drive, capped by a 17-yard TD pass to flanker Al Bell with 15 seconds left.
  • UGA offensive coordinator Neil Callaway (Alabama `78) played under legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant from 1975-77. He was the Crimson Tide's offensive line coach in 1997 and offensive coordinator from 1998-2000 under Mike DuBose. UA assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Joe Kines spent five seasons at UGA as defensive coordinator (1995-98) and asst. head coach (1999). Also, UGA running backs coach Ken Rucker spent three months at UA starting in December of 2000 as a member of Dennis Franchione's staff but then opted to return to Texas A&M in February.
