VANCOUVER, British Columbia --- Richard Scott, a rising sophomore for the University of Georgia men's golf team, won the Canadian Amateur Championship on Sunday at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club.

Scott, a native of Kingsville, Ontario, defeated Chris Baryla of Vernon, British Columbia, 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final. Not only did Scott receive the Earl Grey Cup as Canada's top amateur, but he also earned an exemption into the PGA Tour's Bell Canadian Open next month.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for Richard," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "He had a solid season for us as a freshman, and a win like this should give him even more confidence. This is a huge, huge win for Richard."

Scott was the No. 1 seed heading into the match play portion of the tournament after he won medalist honors during stroke play. Scott carded rounds of 71 and 69 to take medalist honors by two strokes.

Scott opened match play with a 3 and 2 win over Patrick O'Neill, then he defeated Lee Curry 1-up in the quarterfinals and Craig Doell 3 and 2 in the semifinals. In Sunday's final, Scott held a 1-hole advantage before closing with a birdie and two pars on the 31st through 33rd holes and Baryla had a par and two bogeys on the same holes.

Scott saw action in 11 tournaments last season for the Bulldogs, posting a 73.13 scoring average and recording three top-10 individual finishes.
