Athens, Ga. --- Sherill Baker, who started 25 of 30 games for the Georgia Lady Bulldogs as a freshman this season, underwent successful surgery on her right shoulder at Athens' St. Mary's Hospital on Tuesday morning.
Baker, a 5-8, guard from Stone Mountain, Ga., dislocated her shoulder on March 24 during the Lady Bulldogs' win over No. 23 Rutgers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Further testing revealed Baker also tore the labrum in her shoulder. During the arthroscopic procedure on Tuesday, team physicians repaired the labrum (the cartilage in the socket of the shoulder).
"We're pleased Sherill's surgery went well," Lady Bulldog coach Andy Landers said. "While it was a serious injury, the damage seems to have been minimal. We expect Sherill to make a full and complete recovery by the fall."
Baker broke the Lady Bulldogs' freshman record for steals with 89 on the campaign. That bettered the previous tally of 84 set by Lou Sims in 1980-81 and also ranks as the seventh-best single-season tally in Georgia history. Baker also averaged 9.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.
