Lady Bulldogs, Lady Razorbacks Again Meet In Key SEC Matchup
Most meetings between the Georgia Lady Bulldogs and the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks are ripe with post-season implications. At least twice in the last five years, Georgia and Arkansas have squared off with what most considered to be a potential NCAA bid hanging in the balance.
In 1998, the Lady Dogs' 86-81 overtime victory in Fayetteville in the regular-season finale pushed Georgia off the NCAA bubble.
Last season, also in Fayetteville, Arkansas' 66-45 victory moved the Lady Razorbacks to 7-7 in SEC play - considered the magic number by most for an NCAA bid.
Truth be told, those games did not carry the weight many implied them to hold. Arkansas still received an invitation to the "Big Dance" in 1998 and went on to reach the Final Four. Georgia got an NCAA berth with a 6-8 regular-season record in the SEC a year ago.
This afternoon, the NCAA status of both teams seems more secure, but there is still plenty of post-season talk surrounding the matchup. This time, however, the banter is of the SEC Tournament variety.
No. 13 Georgia and No. 15 Arkansas are among a group of five top-25 teams fighting for the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds at the SEC Tournament in two weeks in Little Rock, Ark. The Lady Dogs are alone in third place in the league standings, a game ahead of No. 14 Mississippi State and No. 18 Vanderbilt. The Lady 'Backs and No. 17 South Carolina are a game behind that duo.
