ATHENS -- Georgia senior Billy Bennett passed the NCAA leader for career field goals made Saturday with his 81st coming in the fourth quarter of Georgia's 30-10 win over Kentucky Saturday.
Bennett's 81 career field goals passes Washington's Jeff Jaeger who tallied 80 from 1983-86 according to the 2003 NCAA Football Records book. The All-American Jaeger was 80-for-99 in his career. It should be noted that beginning in 2002, all postseason games are included in NCAA final football statistics and records.
Currently, Bennett is 81-for-104 in field goal attempts including making four in last year's Nokia Sugar Bowl victory over Florida State. Also of note, the NCAA mark for most career field goals attempted is 105 by Luis Zendejas of Arizona State (78-105 from 1981-84) and Phillip Doyle of Alabama (78-for-105 from 1987-90).
Bennett, a 5-8, 165-pound native of Athens, set the Southeastern Conference record for career scoring and field goals made in the win over the Wildcats. He scored 12 points on three field goals and three PATs Saturday to give him 382 points, which ranks sixth in the NCAA record book. Bennett's 81st field goal was a 33-yarder in the fourth quarter.
For the year, Bennett is 25-for-32 in field goals. The SEC record for field goals made in a season is 27 by Fuad Reveiz of Tennessee (27-of-31 in 1982) while the NCAA mark is 29 by John Lee off UCLA (29-of-33 in 1983).
The Bulldogs conclude the regular season with Georgia Tech Saturday at 1 p.m. in Atlanta in a game televised by ABC.
